A first issue is an argument about what a magazine intends to be, and ours is straightforward: we are interested in the parts of a story that take time to understand.

That means fewer pieces, longer, and reported over months rather than days. It means photography commissioned rather than licensed. And it means a willingness to publish a feature about a viaduct, which our own commercial colleagues advised against and which remains, some months later, the piece readers write to us about most.

Thank you for reading the first one. There will be a second.
