The pieces in this issue were commissioned separately and turned out to share a preoccupation with time — specifically, with how much of it real work requires and how badly our institutions are configured to supply it.
The glassmaker on page 30 says he could explain everything he knows in four minutes and that it would take nine years to use any of it. That sentence has been on the wall of our features desk ever since.
